Soccer – Defending Against the Dribble : Soccer Defense: Do Not Stab at the Ball

So what I want to talk about now is defending
and why taking a stab at the ball is the last thing you want to do. Now what I mean by taking
a stab at the ball is, when the dribbler is dribbling at you and he’s got the ball close
to him and you try to kick it, he’s already closer to the ball than you are so all he
has to do is touch it to the side and he’s gone because all your momentum went into that
kick and now you’re off balance. So if you just wait, wait for the time where the dribbler
kicks the ball or pushes it too far out in front of him and then you come in and take
the ball from him. It’s all about giving him less and less and less space until he can’t
do anything. Now if you just try to do everything all at once, he’ll just go right around you
and use your momentum against you. So here’s what I’m talking about with the stab. He’s
coming in, he stabs, I’ll just go around.

whys everyone talking shit about the video. It's only a brief informational video made to give advice.

He actually makes a very good point (though in a typical Yank style) and far too many players are impatient when you need to just hold them up.

thing is most of the time this doesnt happen. and youu cant just wait for the attacker to fuck up. he might actually be decent.

  7. portuviejo says:

honestly I have been watching most of his defensive videos and I, as a defender, can agree with some that he offers essential tips that every defender would asset their goalkeeper/team knowing these

@AnRK1936 Haha I'm not saying that the advice he's giving the defender is bad. The defender just looks goofy as crap whenever he stabs.

  12. Barry SPeas says:

@RealSoccerFan Yeah he's not putting a right lot of effort into at least making it look like he wants the ball is he.

and what makes you think he's trying to instruct you in particular? get lost fool.
what about what he's saying is wrong? Not demonstrably, by instruction. He's not the best player himself but the basics he teaches are correct.

"Wait until the dribbler kicks the ball"
But wait, that's what you're supposed to prevent from happening. As a defender your main goal is to make sure the opposing player doesn't get the opportunity to shoot or make a crucial pass. Also what you're showing in your example isn't a proper stab at the ball. It's just a guy taking a step and planting his foot on the ground before you even get to him. A stab is a well timed, short extension of the foot to disarm the opposing player. Last game I played I was playing right back and all I did was stab the ball and surprise surprise, not one man got the ball past me and not one chance was created for them on my side. If you've got the timing down, stabbing the ball can be extremely effective.

I have an “addiction” to stabbing, I just don’t have patience to wait for the attacking player I just want to go after him a take the ball as fast as possible
