I am sure you find the ocean beautiful. I think it is beyond beautiful.
Because you see it as it is, but I only imagine it. I cannot see it as you do… But I can feel and hear it, better than you… My father who loves surfing,
prayed constantly for me to become a famous surfer. Because of that he even named me
after the first Hawaiian world champion Derek Ho. However, when I was born completely blind due to Glaucoma… …his dream was shattered. Up until then… I was listening to the ocean and… …what my friends were telling me about it. I was wondering if I could do it. At some point I felt the courage in me
to accomplish the dream of my father and myself. You should have seen how happy my father was
when I told him that I wanted to surf. After all, I was his son and
had the blood of a surfer circulating through my veins. And he really believed in me. Many people told me that surfing was too
dangerous for me and I couldn’t do it. All these negative words are like the waves in the ocean.
Trying to tip you over and make you fall. These words made me even more determined to
continue the dream I shared with my father. Every time I fell, I stood up and tried harder. With hard work and passion, I achieved my goal and
was able to stand on the waves, proving them otherwise. Finally I made my father’s dream come true and became a surfer. Once I experienced the feeling of accomplishing my dreams. I wanted to show everyone what else a blind man could do. I was dreaming of new things and
was seeing myself succeed in those dreams. Not being able to see the rest, was not an issue anymore.
