AGAINST MONTGOM ERY FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2012. HOWARD IMPROVES TO 4-1 AGAINST D-3 REGION
XX SCHOOLS, CURRENTLY TIED WITH NORTHERN VIRGINIA FOR THE NUMBER ONE SEED IN THE TOURNAMENT. MATT: CRISTIAN, YOUR FIRST JUCO EL CLASICO,
CAME HERE FROM CATONSVILLE. DID IT LIVE UP TO WHAT YOU WERE EXPECTING? CRISTIAN: TOTALLY. IT WAS A BIG RIVALRY. I DIDN’T KNOW IT WAS THIS BIG. THEY GAVE US A BIG FIGHT. AND, IT WAS PHYSICAL THE WHOLE WAY, THE ENTIRE,
THE WHOLE SECOND HALF WAS JUST PHYSICAL. AND, I’M GLAD WE CAME OUT WITH THE WIN,
CAUSE I THINK WE DESERVED IT. MATT: HOW DO YOU THINK THE TEAM DID WITH THE
PHYSICAL PLAY? I SAW THERE WAS SOME CARDS ISSUED. HOW DO YOU FEEL YOUR TEAM CAME OUT OF THIS
ONE? CRISTIAN: HONESTLY, FROM WHERE WE STARTED
IN THE SEASON I THINK WE DID A LOT BETTER, JUST BECAUSE DURING THE SEASON, THE BEGINNING
OF THE SEASON WE GOT A LOT OF YELLOW CARDS. NOW, WE KINDA STEPPED UP, WE KNOW WHEN TO
FOUL OR NOT, TECHNICAL FOULS. I GOT A YELLOW CARD. I THINK SOME OF THEM WERE JUST, NOT REALLY,
THEY WERE JUST FOULS, I DON’T THINK THEY WERE YELLOWS. BUT, I THINK WE WERE PHYSICAL ENOUGH TO WHERE
THE POINT WE DIDN’T HAVE TO GO AND GET TOO MANY YELLOW CARDS, YOU KNOW. MATT: JUSTIN, WAS THIS MATCH EVERYTHING YOU
EXPECTED TODAY? THIS RIVALRY GAME. JUSTIN: YOU KNOW, IT WAS A BIG GAME. I EXPECTED IT TO BE TOUGH. IT WAS TOUGH, THEY WERE PHYSICAL, THEY CAME
OUT STRONG, WE HAD TO COME OUT STRONGER. AND, I THINK IT WAS GOOD. I PLAYED IN SOME RIVALRY GAMES, COMING FROM
CENTENNIAL, HAVING TO PLAY HEBRON. SO, I’M USED TO THE BIG RIVALRY GAMES. I KNOW THE EXPECTATIONS. I KNOW IT’S LIKE YOU GOTTA STEP-UP A LITTLE
BIT. AND, I THINK WE DID THAT TODAY. I THINK EVERYTHING WENT WELL. FIRST HALF, WE HAD A LOT OF CHANCES TO TAKE. WE DIDN’T REALLY TAKE ‘EM. WE, OF COURSE, DANIEL WITH THE GOOD FINISH. HE TOOK HIS CHANCE. WE HAD A LOTTA CHANCES WE SHOULDA FINISHED. BUT, YOU KNOW, IN THE END, IT WAS A GOOD RESULT. MATT: COACH, A BIG RIVALRY WIN FOR YOU TODAY. WHAT DOES THIS DAY MEAN TO YOU? PLAYING MONTGOMERY. IT’S A BIG RIVALRY, BETWEEN THESE TWO PROGRAMS. STEFAN: IT’S MEANT A LOT. IT MEANS THAT, EVEN, AS NOT AS BIG, A ROSTER
THAT THEY HAVE. STILL WE COMPETITIVE, GOOD WIN AGAINST A VERY
GOOD PROGRAM. MATT: JUSTIN WAS SAYING HE THINKS THE TEAM’S
PRETTY FIT. HOW DO YOU FEEL THE TEAM IS WITH FITNESS,
BEING ABLE TO, YOU KNOW, HAVE THESE POSTSEASON GAMES COMING UP WHERE THERE’S GONNA BE A
GAME WITH ONE OF DAY REST IN BETWEEN. STEFAN: UMM, I’M EXCITED GOING FORWARD TO
THE PLAYOFFS NEXT WEEK. I THINK WE’RE IN GOOD SEEDING POSITION THIS,
THIS YEAR. HOPEFULLY SAVING A PLAY DAY IN GAME, WILL
GIVE US A GOOD CHANCE WITH FRESH LEGS TO MEET THE OPPONENT, WHO WILL HAVE A GAME BEFORE
THEY PLAY AGAINST US AT SEMIS. MATT: WERE YOU HAPPY WITH THE WAY YOUR TEAM
RESPONDED AFTER YOU SCORED THE GOAL AND THEN THE REST OF THE GAME PLAYED OUT THE WAY IT
DID. WERE YOU HAPPY WITH HOW YOUR TEAM PLAYED IN
THE SECOND HALF? STEFAN: WE CAME, VERY STRONG, CAME OUT VERY
STRONG IN THE FIRST HALF. SCORE EARLY GOAL, COULD HAVE GET, AT LEAST,
COUPLE OF MORE. THAT WAS A GAME PLAN, JUST TO PRESS, JUST
TO USE THE WHOLE FIELD, AND KEEP THEM QUIET IN ANY HOPE THAT THEY COULD STEAL SOMETHING
AWAY FROM US HERE. SECOND HALF WAS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT AS WE
GET THE GOAL. AND, MONTGOMERY THEN HAD TO CHASE THE GAME,
WE HAD DIFFERENT STRATEGY TO BE A LITTLE MORE CONSERVATIVE, LITTLE MORE STAY HOME AND WAIT
FOR OPEN SPACES THAT OUR OPPONENTS, THEY LEFT US BECAUSE OF CHASING THE GAME. THEY PUT MORE PEOPLE UP FRONT. AND, UMM, AS YOU SAW IN THE GAME, WE HAD A
LOT OF GOOD CHANCES IN THE SECOND HALF, BECAUSE OF THE SPEED AND SKILLS IN OUR PLAYERS UP
FRONT. UNFORTUNATELY, WE WERE NOT ABLE TO GET THE
SECOND OR THIRD GOAL, BUT, AND THEN THE WIN IS WIN. ONE-NOTHING, VERY PLEASED AND HAPPY AND PROUD
OF THE PERFORMANCE OF OUR TEAM. MATT: THE LAST FEW SEASONS, YOU’VE HAD BAD
LUCK IN THE POSTSEASON, IT SEEMS LIKE. WITH A COUPLE LOSSES TO NOVA . HOW DO YOU
THINK, DO YOU THINK THERE’S ANYTHING YOU CAN DO DIFFERENTLY THIS YEAR? OR IS, YOU GOING WITH THE SAME MINDSET, OR,
HOW DO YOU FEEL THIS YEAR WILL BE DIFFERENT? I KNOW YOU HAVE A NEW GROUP THIS YEAR, HOW
DO YOU FEEL THIS YEAR WILL BE DIFFERENT, IN TERMS OF THE POSTSEASON? STEFAN: WELL, EVERY YEAR, YOU KNOW, WE DON’T
HAVE, UMM, SAME GROUP. WE, AS MUCH AS WE WORK HARD TO HAVE THEM BACK,
SOME OF THEM ARE NOT CAPABLE TO GET THEIR GRADES UP, SOME OF THEM, THEY MOVING TO DIFFERENT
SCHOOLS AND PROGRAMS. UMM, SO, IT’S TOUGH, AND, WE NEVER KNOW. BUT, THE POSTSEASON, THROUGHOUT THE SEASON,
YOU KNOW, COULD GIVE YOU CHANCE TO SEE WHERE YOUR SQUAD IS, WHAT THEY CAPABLE OF. AND,
I FEEL THAT THIS YEAR COULD BE A VERY GOOD YEAR FOR US. UH, WE CAN MAKE SOME DEEP RUN, WE CAN MAKE
SOME NOISE. UM, I KNOW WINNING GAMES AGAINST MONTGOMERY,
AGAINST ANNE ARUNDEL, AGAINST PRINCE GEORGE’S COMMUNITY COLLEGE TALKS A LOT ABOUT THE STRENGTH
OF THE TEAM THIS YEAR. THE GAME AGAINST NOVA, EVEN WE LOST, I THINK
WAS A EVENLY PLAYED GAME. UM, YOU KNOW, THE LIGHTNING CAME, UH, NOT
AT A PERFECT TIME. ENDED UP LOSING ONE-NOTHING. BUT, I THINK WE HAVE PRETTY GOOD CHANCE BASED
ON OUR CONSISTENT PERFORMANCES THROUGHOUT THE REGULAR SEASON. MATT: AND, CAN WE A QUICK UPDATE ON YOUR THUNDER
PROGRAMS. WHO’S A THUNDER SOCCER CLUB TEAM MAKING
SOME NOISE RIGHT NOW FOR YOU? STEFAN: WELL, WE HAVE, YOU KNOW, FEW VERY
GOOD TEAMS IN 2003, 2004, 2005, ON THE BOYS SIDE. 2008, STILL, TEN YEARS OLD, BUILDING UP GOOD
FOUNDATION. THUNDER SOCCER CLUB, IT’S BEEN A, YOU KNOW,
PROGRAM FOR LONG, LONG, LONG TIME HERE IN HOWARD COUNTY. WITH A GOOD HISTORY, PROVIDE OPPORTUNITY FOR
KIDS IN THE HOWARD COUNTY JUST TO GET ANOTHER OPTION ON JUST THE BIG ORGANIZATION HERE IN
THE COUNTY, SAC. (music)
