BEACH. KIMBERLEE SPEAKMAN HAS MORE. KIMBERLEE? KIMBERLEE: BRIGETTE, THE SHARK TOOK A HUGE BITE OUT OF MAX KELIIKIPI’S BOARD. AND MAX SAYS IF HE WAS SITTING JUST A COUPLE INCHES TO THE THIS IS WHAT’S LEFT OF MAX KELIIKIPI’S SURFBOARD. MAX KELIIKIPI, SURFER: SHOWING BOARD “IT’S LIKE BIGGER THAN MY HEAD. IT’S HIGH. IT’S ACTUALLY PRETTY BIG. I DIDN’T EVEN RECOGNIZE HOW BIG THE SHARK MARK WAS UNTIL LIKE RIGHT NOW.” IT WAS AROUND SUNDOWN SUNDAY WHEN MAX SAYS HE WAS WAITING FOR ONE LAST WAVE. HE WAS ABOUT A HUNDRED YARDS OFFSHORE WHEN HE SPOTTED WHAT HE THOUGHT WAS A TURTLE FIN IN THE WATER. HE DIDN’T REALIZE IT WAS A SHARK UNTIL IT WAS RIGHT NEXT TO HIM. MAX KELIIKIPI: “IT GOES UNDERNEATH THE WATER, I PUT MY FEET ON TOP OF MY BOARD. I’M JUST SITTING THERE, LOOKING AROUND FOR IT.” MAX KELIIKIPI, SURFER: “AND THEN BOOM, IT COMES UNDERNEATH ME, BITES MY BOARD. ” MAX KELIIKIPI: “IT WAS LITERALLY AND I’M NOT EXAGGERATING THIS AT ALL, LITERALLY AN INCH OR TWO IN FRONT OF MY FEET.” THE FORCE THREW MAX INTO THE WATER. HE’S A JUNIOR LIFEGUARD, SO HIS INSTINCTS IMMEDIATELY KICKED IN. MAX KELIIKIPI: “THERE IS THAT FEAR FACTOR. IT WAS THE FIGHT OR FLIGHT THING AND FOR ME IT WAS JUST FLIGHT.” MAX KELIIKIPI: “AS SOON AS I HIT THE WATER, I JUST STARTED SWIMMING AND I DIDN’T THINK ABOUT WHERE THE SHARK WAS. I JUST HAD TO GET IN.” HE WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT TO SHORE SAFETY. BUT THIS COMES JUST THREE MONTHS SHARK ATTACK ON MAUI. ACCORDING TO THE D-L-N-R,THERE’S BEEN 7 SHARK ATTACKS JUST THIS YEAR, UP FROM 3 LAST YEAR AND 5 IN 2017. 4 OF THOSE ATTACKS OCCURRED HERE ON OAHU. AS FOR MAX, HE SAYS HE’S LEARNED HIS LESSON. MAX KELIIKIPI: “NEXT TIME I’M JUST GOING TO GO IN THE DAYTIME AND WITH MY FRIENDS, NOT SURFING ALONE ANYMORE.” KIMBERLEE: MAX BELIEVES THE SHARK THAT BIT HIS BOARD WAS BETWEEN 10 TO 12 FEET LONG. TODAY SIGNS WERE POSTED ALONG THE SHORELINE LETTING PEOPLE KNOW A SHARK WAS SEEN IN THE AREA. BACK TO YOU. NEW AT NINE…

Sorry, I cry "foul": That looks nothing like a shark bite. Not in size, shape, nor the edge. It looks like a break. Maybe a "fish story" that got out of hand?
